I have 2 4 ohm dvc subs and an amp that is 800 rms at 4 ohm but the combined rms of the subs is 1000 rms. is this ok to under power the subs or should i connect them with a 1 ohm load and turn the subs down?
What i have:
Alpine SWR-1042D Subs x 2
Kenwood excelon x1200d amp
Well i guess the first thing to determine is if your amp is stable to 1 ohm mono. if it puts out 800watts rms at 4 ohms, i would imagine it puts out more than that at 1 ohm, IF of course its stable at 1 ohm.

The website says its 1 ohm stable but has no rms wattage posted next to this. It also says its 1200 rms at 2 ohms but I cannot connect my subs to 2 ohms.
Wire your two subs according to the wiring diagram found on this site; series-wire each DVC sub and then parallel the two subs for 4 ohms. https://www.the12volt.com/caraudio/woofer_configurations.asp~Q~2~I~42
You cannot "underpower" speakers. Their RMS continuous power handling rating does not have to precisely match the amplifier's RMS power rating.

Build the box so that it performs well in the worst case scenario and, in return, it will reward you at all times.
