So my buddy got a Panasonic CQ-VD7001U flip out head unit and he wanted me to put it in his car. So finally today I made it over to his house and got it all hooked up. After I reconnected the ground wire to the battery, it powered on, but the flip out screen won't come out. If you press the power button, it will turn the deck on and off. Although, when I press the button to open the screen it makes the speakers beep 4 times.

My buddy got this deck from his friends brother, after he sold his truck. Apparently it worked when he took it out, but for some reason he says that he left the wire harness for it in the truck when he sold it and just took the deck out. So after my friend got it, he called Panasonic and ordered a new harness for it. Could the new harness have something to do with it?

Also, he doesn't have the remote for it either. Does anyone know if that could have something to do with the initial setup?

Anyone have any thoughts?

If it is beeping to alert you that it is fixing to open, the plug is not your problem.  It is common for those units to have gear problems.  Have you tried grabbing the left and right edge of the screen and helping it out when it is supposed to move.  I have seen them get stuck and need a little help to free them up.

Leaving the plug in his truck sounds a little fishy to me.

Try the reset button if that unit has one.

Late response, but here it goes.

I got the screen to flip out after you mentioned that they commonly have gear issues. I pushed the pulled on it and got it to come out. Everything works fine, except for this issue.

As far as it seeming fishy that the harness was left in the truck, I thought the same thing. The first thought that came to my mind was that it was stolen, but there's nothing I can do about that. My buddy got it for free, and he claims he saw it in the truck before it was sold. Who knows...

Anyways, thanks for the help guys.

I am glad we were able to help you to get it working.  Just remember to be careful and do not watch while driving.

I just encountered this same problem with the same model stereo a couple of weeks ago.  I put it in and it worked fine, so I released the car to the owner and he called the next day and said the screen wasn't motoring out.  It would give the beeps but that's it.  The motor that drives the screen out/in wasn't making any noise.  The guy admitted that he tried to put a disc in and "missed" the slot and the disc actually went between the screen and the cd slot.  I removed the deck, took it apart, and found that a ribbon cable had come unplugged from the screen to the circuit board in the disc potion of the unit.  When he pushed the disc in, the ribbon cable became unplugged.  If you take it apart, it is like to pieces of equipment (screen and dvd/cd) in one housing.  I plugged in the ribbon cable and then it worked.  Check yours out and that might be the problem.
