Hi. First post on your forum, so hope I'm in the right spot for the topic...
Just installed a new Pioneer AVIC X920BT nav unit in my 2005 Ford F-150 SuperCrew pickup. The kids are really digging the new DVD video screen in the back seat, but my wife and I are quickly tiring of having to listen to the movie audio for the entire trip. I'm looking for ideas on how to bypass the OEM speakers and sub and route the sound to IR headphones instead. I'm not afraid of electronics, but I am on a limited budget--my first thought was simply to pipe all the channels (LF, LR, RF, RR, and sub remote turn-on) through a bunch of parallel 12V relays. The idea there is to pipe the RF and LF channels to the IR blaster while killing the rear channels and the sub.
I think I'd lose my nav voice prompts while the system is in bypass mode, but that's OK considering the alternative...6 hours of Harry Potter and Free Willy between Tucson and L.A...
Note: I'm using only the high power outputs from the nav unit via the stock speakers now, but likely will end up upgrading to amps and crossover for the four audio channels eventually.
Is there a better way to do this?

You will need to do some research to verify this can happen. I am pretty sure your deck will do this, but you need to check. You need to look for and purchase infrared headphones that come with an IR transmitter. You will connect the decks rear monitor output audio jacks to the input of the transmitter. You should be able to set the source for the rear monitor to DVD, and then select Radio for the rest of the system.
Just about all of the overhead DVD/Monitor units have built in Infrared.
Unfortunately, my head unit, model X920BT does not have rear monitor outputs as you describe. To get the rear monitor audio out I would need the Z120BT nav unit instead.
Back to my original query...any other suggestions out there?
