every year or so i go thru another autozone battery. so i deciding to go with optima . im a little confused because the red is more for starting and the yellow is for when the car is running to keep the voltage up . so which one you all suppose should be good for me. when i start the car i always make sure the face plate from my radio is off so i dont try to turn the car on and the radio as well. i have a 1993 cadillac sedan deville so any suggestions

Are you sure its a battery problem?

And from what I have read, Kinetic may be a more reliable option....

Well I have too much Wired to that one battery I have 3 amps leds and so forth.usually when my battery goes my alt dies shortly after. Its a hi output cs144 250a. And the battery ive been using is a duralast 800cca 1000ca

So "too much" is your problem.

At least is isn't overcharging (heating, warping etc).

Strange that it should effect the alternator.

But merely changing battery will probably not change much - unless you need deep cycle rather than cranking.
Have you tried a wet-cell battery, or is this mounted internally and not the main cranker?

I haven't tried a deep cycle that's why I was thinking omptia batts. The alt usually goes and its usually a diode. As for the other battery your speaking of never tried it

Wet cells tolerate abuse far better than AGM (wrt to over-discharge, overcharge etc) and are far cheaper.

AGM are generally only used when internal (not in engine bays or other vented enclosures); rarely used vehicles (rarely charged); where low internal resistance is important; blingsters; and misled people.

Judging by your situation, the above do not apply.

If your alternator can't keep up, upgrade it.

If it's battery drain when not running (charging), only a bigger capacity battery will help. (AFAIK wet cells are "commonly" bigger.)
Or there is the option of a low voltage cutout (if too high a discharge is the problem as opposed to high discharge rate).
Or dual batteries for cranking independence, or (multi-battery) sharing of loads.

ROT - adding high-powered accessories to a vehicle almost always required alternator upgrading.

And normally I would criticise an alternator that blows its main diode(s) (that's why I dumped Bosch up to ~120A), but 250A may have component limitations - that is an alternator size that I haven't investigated and am inexperienced with.

Sounds like a cheap HO alternator issue to me. Have you had it tested at idle? Does it put out enough at idle to keep up with every load in the vehicle, plus half the fuse rating of your stereo?

Your car came with a 140 amp alternator stock, most likely 100 amps at idle. Add half the fuse rating of all your stereo components plus 100 amps and that's the minimum amps at idle you need from your alternator to keep the electrical system in harmony.

since I had my alt rebuilt it hasnt broke on me .my alt runs 14.5 and with the sounds up it runs between 14.5/14.0. I believe I may need a deep cycle. So a yellow top is my best option

The 14.5V is good.

So the battery is failing because you are running when the engine is not charging?

I'd suggest a bigger battery. And a wet cell. But I'm just repeating myself myself.
(I don't know why you think you need an AGM.)

Otherwise let us know how it goes (say) December 2011 unless there is a failure before that.

Best wishes.

I never have the radio turned up when the car is off due to the cars setup I always turn the bass off. I also installed a voltage meter in my dash so I can monitor the voltage when the car is running. So far ive noticed its been Ok and lil times it drops to 12ish and when I move the car again it jumps up to 13.8-14.0 .the biggest altvi saw I can fit is 250a. But ive seen these new alts where they have a extra set of doides on the rear set of the casing what you all think of these new alt heres a link

"Car is moving" means charging?

If your alternator is ok (and not blowing) I see no need for altered diodes. (Not that I agree with the "twice as efficient" with dual diodes, but that's not the point of the diode pairing anyhow.)

From your description, it does sound like a bad battery. Maybe they do typically fail after 12 months. (But that's 4 times longer than the Optimas I general hear of LOL!)

And again, I do not understand why you are using an AGM - especially if they are used and fail that often.

So the duralast battery I have Is a bad choice and the optima. The batteries are purchased new not used tho. What do you recommend. I'm kinda shotting myself in the foot with All these extra electronic upgrades and a power everthing car huh..... as for those new Alts i was refering to does it seem like a good upgrade in the future

I thought I had suggested options.
I can't suggest anything else based on the limited information.

I had this dream....

It was one of those where I was simplyfalling but I was saved by a car.
I put it down to its use of multiple batteries.

Strange dreams I have these days....

I hope I have another like it...
