Even when "dimmed", all aftermarket head units that I'm aware of are too bright when driving down an unlit forest road. I do this often.

Once upon a time, Alpine offered certain head units with "blackout mode" that would turn off every light on the head unit. The only one I'm aware of (the CDA-9886) requires the addition of a $150 signal processor to operate in blackout mode.

I'm wondering if Alpine has continued with this feature, or if any other manufacturer of good head units has a similar feature.

Check out the KDCX595 from Kenwood.

Another one I found is the Alpine CDA-117. Apparently does blackout with no additional hardware.

I am again looking for this exact thing...I'm surprised it isn't a more frequently asked for feature.
