Hi folks. Looks like a great forum here.

I have a 2008 Honda Civic Hybrid and just bought the following for it:

Sony CDXGT550IU Head Unit

Polk DXi6500 Component System

Polk DXi650 Coaxials

Polk 600W Amp

And I also have a Bazooka tube from my other car that I'll be hooking up to this system.

My question is this: I've never installed car audio or worked with electrical issues before. Should I try to install this package myself with some instruction, or should I plunk down the additional money and have it professionally installed?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated -- thanks!

My advice is to support a local independent shop in your area and have them do it. Realize there are other pieces of gear you also need, such as an into-car wiring harness adapter for your head unit, power and ground wire and fusing for the amp, speaker wire and perhaps sound deadening for the doors depending on how far you want to go. You'll pay retail for all these things, plus the cost of the installation. A relatively simple installation like yours should not require more than two hours shop time. Although Civics are relatively simple to work on, being a hybrid might make it a little tricky to tackle for a first timer. Plus if you develop a good relationship with a shop you might find it paying off in other ways over time.

Would you suggest that I have them connect the Bazooka directly to the head unit and not to the amp? The Sony head unit has its own sub level control, and also has low pass and high pass filters.

I'm not looking for a mega bass system, just to round out the sound with the Bazooka sub. I don't listen to bass music.

If the Bazooka is self-powered then yes, it should be connected to the head unit subwoofer output. It will still need proper power and ground run to it as well as interconnect cables.
