I have an american bass 4 channel amp, the input has two channels for rca's labeled "channel 1" and "channel 2". does this mean that to power each channel they each need an rca? from my bass amp would i need a cable that has two out puts?

If you have a four channel amp then it requires four channels of input. Channel one and channel two are two of the four and yes, each channel needs an RCA input. I am not sure what you are asking actually...

well today i just got a splitter, so would i be able to run a four channel rca cable to the four channel and a regular rca to the bass amp? or could i just run a short four channel rca from the output on the bass amp to the four channel?

To work correctly. Run the front rca from the radio the chan.1 the rear rca out to chan. 2 and the sub preout to the sub amp.

the headunit only has on preout. so what if i ran the rca from the headunit to the bass amp. then i ran a splitter from the bass amp output to the four channels input?

You would have NO fader control. Better to have a deck with enough rca outputs to support your install, BUT you could wire line out converters to the front and rear speaker outputs of the deck, then run 3 sets of RCA's to the amps and everything will work correctly.
