I'm designing a custom speaker box for my 1985 Camaro. Instead of doing the well box, I might make something custom. I know I can get the required volume (sealed box), but the depth is going to be tight - I'll probably only have about an inch between the magnet and the back of the box. As long as the volume is correct, this shouldn't matter right?

If you want to get technical, your magnet clearance should be the same or greater than the diameter of the voicecoil to allow for proper voicecoil cooling. So if your sub has the standard 2 inch voicecoil, then you should have 2 inches of clearance between the magnet and the back of the box.

The reality is that this is not always an option. As long as you are not blocking the voicecoil vent and are allowing air to circulate, then it shouldn't be a problem. It also depends on how hard you are driving the subwoofer.

As mentioned above, it's an issue if your subwoofer has a vented pole piece. If the back of the magnet is sealed, it doesn't matter at all as long as it fits.
