When I adjust the gain on my Kicker DX700, I hear a static sound from the sub and the output of the sub will either decrease or increase significantly with very little movement of the gain. It reminds me of the static and intermittent volume changes with old shaft-mount radios.

Could this possibly be fixed by spraying the gain pot with tuner spray or some sort of electronics cleaner? The amp has seen a little dust over the years so it's entirely possible that the pot is dirty. Just curious if anyone experienced this.

Do not use tuner or contact cleaner.  WD-40 is the way to go.  If the potentiometer is sealed, you may have to remove the control from the circuit board and go to a hardware store and purchase a pipe nipple that the pot will fit into.  Purchase 2 plastic pipe caps as well.  Drill a hole in one of the pipe caps.  Insert the pot into the nipple and put enough WD-40 to cover the pot.  Now take a rubber tipped blow nozzle attached to an air hose and pressurize the aparatus.  This will inject the WD-40 into the sealed pot.

With the engine running, if you touch the heat sink of the amp, do you hear a humming noise coming through the speakers?  Not engine noise but a 60 cycle hum?

not that i recall. i'll check it in the morning and see. to date though, i dont recall hearing such a noise. and the static is only when i touch the gains. i was wondering why i wasnt having any output on that sub and when i touched the gain, i heard the static and the sub got really loud suddenly, then really quiet without me really turning the gain.

If the hum is present when you touch the amp, it could be an issue with the tiny surface mount fuse inside the amp.  So if it does hum, do not remove the pot.  With the amp turned off, turn the pot from end to end about 20 times.  This action will kind of clean the pot.  If that makes it a little better, the WD will fix your problem.
