1999 gmc yukon intermittent stereo

Just bought a used '99 Yukon and the factory stereo, doesn't matter if it's the radio, tape deck, or cd player, randomly turns itself off and then immediately back on. I haven't been able to find any info on anybody else having this problem so, I turned to good ol' 12volt.

I am installing an aftermarket unit, of course, but depending on what the issue is (whether it's actually the factory head unit itself or an electrical issue) I don't want to install the aftermarket head unit until I get it figured out.

its possible that it is the radio itself or that it might be a loose connection at the plug.

does all the lighting go off also? or the radio just looks like it is off when it happens?

do you currently have only factory speakers hooked to it and nothing else?

This answered my problem. My deductive reasoning must be off today . Just the display and sound go off and back on. Not the button lights. So looks like my new head unit should fix the problem.

so you have a possible an intermittent keyed power wire?

A shorted speaker will make the factory amplifier shut off. 

There are two power feeds to the radio. If the clock resets then you have a problem with the battery feed to the radio. If the clock retains the time, then you may have a bad radio or a faulty ignition feed to the radio.

Ok....when just listening to the regular radio it doesn't do it. It's only when using the factory in-dash cd player. Also, since the radio button backlighting stays on through the whole process and just the display and sound turns off and then right back on do you still think it could be the ignition power wire or just a bad unit.

and yes the clock retains the correct time

you probably have a faulty connection inside the radio that goes in and out when the cd player moves or vibrates.

There are 2 possible radios for that vehicle. Do you have a remote CD player or a remote cassette deck? Remove the radio from the dash and leave it connected. Play the CD and move the wiring around to see if the problem occurs. Ideally use a volt meter on the wires at the same time to see if the power drops out or the component fails internally.
