Hi I have a 2001 suzuki xl 7 and I want to hook up an amplifier with out having to drill through the firewall. It want to know how to install a new cigarette plug in the back of my car (where to connect wires, what gauge wire to use, ect.) Or I would like to know if I can use the factory plug to power an amp (1000watts max). I want to setup my system like this for quick "plug and play."

Do not try to run an amp of that size on a cigarette lighter socket. You will need to use an 8 Ga. wire. It needs to be run to the battery.

If I wire a new 12v plug with 8 gauge wire would I be able to power the amp?

dont use a cigarette lighter plug to run an amp over 200 watts. an amp of that size needs to be ran straight to the battery with an inline fuse less than 18 inches from the battery. using a non-heavy-duty plug in between the amp and the battery could cause damage to the amp or car from extra heat build up from trying to pass a lot of current through a bad connection. -------------

If you're running an 8 gauge lead to the socket, anyway, then why not just continue to the Amp? Those are some fancy connectors, Mr. I...

They are commonly called Anderson connectors. Probably the commonest LV DC connectors in use (trailers, dual-batteries, camping etc).
As to running 8G to a cig socket - from where?
And why use a cig socket which - although it "should" handle 15A - often handle far less.
They are also a major cause of fires (not due to the heater plug but simply dues to their poor connection to other loads, hence why many accessories that draw several amps through their cig plugs have thermal fuses fitted (eg, Engel's 10A thermal fuse for their 2.5A & 5A fridges).
I wouldn't even use a Euro cig socket (Merit etc) for audio. (They are spec'd to 20A and have far superior connection to traditional cig sockets.)
