I read from on an old thread a recommendation to build an enclosure for this sub with 1" MDF and 2" baffle. The problem is that there is no 1" MDF to be had in town (at least as far as I can find). Everything is 1/2" to 3/4".

My question is; can I simply use 1/2 MDF and double up on all sides (quadruple up for baffle, obviously)? Are there any downsides to doubling the wood like that?

use 3/4" MDF and double up the baffle. dont use 1/2" because its just a waste of time and money. btw what kind of sub is that? the downsides to having a multi-layered box is that it wont be strong at all if you dont layer them properly with screws and wood glue or liquid nails between each layer.

Oh, I plan on using plenty of glue between layers. The sub is an older Eclipse (made for them by TC Sound, IIRC).

yea i had a feeling it was eclipse from the model number you gave but wasnt totally sure. that is one beast of a sub but its not at the level where it needs to have a double layered enclosure. use 3/4" MDF and double up the front baffle where you will mount the sub and you should be fine. multi-layer boxes are mainly for true spl systems that intend on competing. i just built a serious blow-through box in a ford ranger for two 18" subs. 15 cubic feet of airspace and the whole box is double layered 3/4" MDF, so 1.5" total all around.

building a box that is 2" thick for a single 12 is total overkill especially if you have to use 1/2" MDF and make so many cuts just to get a certain thickness.
