Whats up everyone,

I have a 06' Corolla with a Kenwood KDC-BT952HD deck in protect mode. The screen says "PROTECT" and it is not blinking . This car receiver is being used to push one pair of 6x9 speakers (REF9633cf - 100 watts RMS - 2ohms) and one pair of 6.5" component set speakers (REF6030cs - 90 watts RMS - 2 ohms). The Kenwood's full bandwidth power is 22W x 4. at 4-8 ohm. I'm thinking this the reason why the deck is going into protected mode after a few hours of play? I think overheating is the problem here not a short like Kenwood suggests in there manual. Also, I'm using the stock (20 gauge ?) wiring. On the other hand, I've had problems with Infinity speakers shorting once they touch the sheet metal (flawed?). Anyone had a similiar problem and found a solution?

Looking for a second opinion. Any help would be great.

So your running the deck at 2 ohms and are surprised that it is over heating, the deck is shutting down to keep itself from blowing up. Bigger power and ground will help, but its still well overloaded. You need to be running 4 ohm speakers.

Try resetting the deck. If it does not have a reset button, unplug it for a minute or so. If it still says protect, disconnect every speaker from the deck. Power it back up, does it still say protect? If so, chances are the output IC has faulted. If it does not say protect, get some 4 ohm speakers and thank God you dodged a bullet.

So, the deck is brand new, but I swapped it anyway just to eliminate the possibility of a faulty IC.

The "protect" message is still there. I want to believe that the problem is related to overheating but how can it be when the message pops up in the morning. As soon as I switch on the power, there it is. I've reset the unit going on nine times now and it never goes into protected while I'm listening.

I am thinking faulty speakers. Just need to find out which speaker, or speakers. I have had this problem before with Infinity speakers. Once in a 2001 Camry. Now in a Corolla. They work fine until they are screwed to sheet metal. Then they short out intermittently. Could it be because the speakers are cold? Could it be the car? What if I change all four speakers and the problem is still there?

Your speakers are fine, the fact that they are 2 ohm drivers is the problem.

Thanks I am an idiot, I think your right. It makes the most sense. Looks like the solution is to add an amp to push those loudspeakers. Cuz right now it's like your average midget trying to push a 300 lb barbell. It's just not gonna happen.
