is there a limit on the imput voltage on some amps as to how high the power can be on the inputs for the RCA jacks? I have seen some headunits with output power as much as 5v and i was wondering is it safe to use this on any amp?

Yes you need to check the specs on the amp! It is known as input sensitivity, some amps cannot accept a high voltage input. Definately want to check the specs.

If you already have the amp and headunit, you can buy an aftermarket gain gontroller like this one from Rockford that will allow you to adjust the voltage level going to the amp. I'm not endorsing RF, I just threw it out there because I've seen that particular one used before to solve this type of problem.

some amps can accept beyond 16V for input, some as little as 3V...some even less than that...you can blow the input stage by over loading it if you put too much power into it...
