I am getting ready to install a DEH-6400BT unit in an 04 Buick Century and it looks to me like the stereo opening is not deep enough. Do I need to modify the opening or just have the stereo stick out a little bit?

It would look a whole lot better if you removed whatever is in the way.

yes you need to cut out whatever is in the way but be very careful because there might be important things like wire harnesses directly behind the plastic panels.
