im looking to buy a new head unit for my new car, but this time id like to try and purchase one that has the ability to properly display japanese characters when using the ipod interface. there were a couple double dins ive had that did this properly, but as far and model and brand it was really hit and miss. of course the headunit will have to at least have a led screen of some sort to do this. but was wondering if i could even purchase something like a kenwood x996 or something similar and reflash the firmware? can anyone that listens to japanese music chime in with their experience? thank you!

You might try contacting a Japanese company like Clarion and see if they will sell you a Japan-spec head unit here in the USA. Clarion Japan web page
