I have a alpine mrx-m110 amp hooked up to 1 swr12d4 i had it hooked up 2 ohm and the gain all the way up which blew the sub . went and got a new sub turned the gain to half way because it was obviously overpowered on 2 ohm and my son turned the preamp on the sterio up to 4 which is all the way up is this the reason why the new sub blew it crackles and sounds like crap now it pounded before

You should not be guessing wildly where to set your gains. There are tools to set it scientifically, but if you just want to get in the ballpark turn the gain and bass boost to 0, turn the crossover to around 70. Start by turning the radio up until it sounds distorted. Muffled or under water. Turn the volume back down until it sounds clear again. That is your new max volume. (a factory radio may go all the way up because it is internally limited to the clipping point). Turn your gain up until the sub sounds like it is slapping its physical limits. Distortion will sound like you are punching the cone while it is playing. Turn the gain back down until that bad sound goes away. I would bet on that setup at 2 ohms you will be between 1/4 and 3/8 of the dial. For some reason when the ohm load drops so does the max gain before distortion. At least that is the case on Alpine and Kicker non digital amps.
