Out of curiosity, why do some people mount subs backwards so that the magnet is showing as opposed to the dustcap? Is this strictly for looks, or is there some acoustical advantage/disadvantage to doing this? Also, when subs are mounted this way, how do you calculate the enclosure size? Thanx in advance.

It’s called inverting and it’s just for looks, it doesn’t sound any different. When you calculate the enclosure size you calculate it just like you would for any other enclosure. Then subtract the volume the sub takes up for the final volume of your enclosure

Actually, just as a note, yes sometimes it is inverting, but in the case of one enclosure I built for a friend's 1984 Honda Accord, it also saves space when used as a "clam-shell" push-pull isobaric or isovented box.
I made a 2.0 cu. ft. enclosure with a 3" port in one corner, filled it with polyfill, and installed a 12" Cerwin-Vega XL-12D DVC sub inside. Then I screwed a second 12" facing the first one, so the air mass between the cones was sealed.
Then I wired them 180 degrees out of phase so they moved "together", voice coils wired in parallel, for a 2 ohm stereo load on an Orion 280GX, supplying 160 watts RMS
tiny box that hit HARD when it was done. crossed over at about 60Hz with a coustic XM-3.
This setup not only looked really neat, it was done for functionality too.
This Accord survived shiopment to Germany for 5 years and came back, all safe and sound, with heavy use for a good 6 or 7 years before we gutted the car and sold it.
Then I got to do his Fiero GT.. hehe but that's a whole different story.. (that car was tight when it was done! hehe)
