I should hope someone here knows... when you increase the volume, what actually goes up?

Well... I'm not sure what you're looking for.  There are several possible answers to this question.  I guess one would be the sound pressure level will increase which your brain will interpret as 'louder."  Or did you mean what happens inside the electronics?  That answer would be that any number of voltage and/or current signals increase in amplitude, and the output transistors (or tubes) allow a larger voltage signal to pass through to the speakers.  Is this the kind of answer you're looking for??

Wow.  Yeah, I was just curious.  I figured that, when I turned the volume knob up, that either the current or potential would increase and cause the speakers to play louder.  That answers my question perfectly.
