the "ohm" is the load DC resistance, if you look up the maximum power transfer theorm you will read that maximum power tranfer occurs when the source has the same internal resistance (thevinin) as of the load. Lower the resistance tho will cause more current draw (P=I^2 * R), and therefore more heat. That is why it is important. Note: i call it the DC resistance because impedence in a coil changes resulting from the change in frequency.

Technical answer is ohms law

Laymens terms, ohms is the measure of resistance.
Less Ohms = Less Resistance = More Power and better efficiency

Multiple subwoofers can be wired to achieve a different "total" ohm load than just one of the subs. For example, if you have one 4ohm SVC (single voice coil) sub then you can only wire it to an amplifier at a 4ohm "total" load. But, if have two 4ohm SVC subs, then you can wire each sub on it's own channel at a 4ohm "total" load per sub, or you can combine the wiring for the subs and produce either a 2ohm or 8ohm "total" load. Here's some links to online wiring wizards that may help show the differences...

An RCA cable is also refered to as a "patch cable". Here's a picture of one...
