I have read posts and manuals and specs until I was thoroughly confused about what speakers, subs, amps will work in my 2013 hyundai elantra sedan without nav. I really want to keep the factory receiver but replace the 4 door speakers (6.5") and add 2 subs (got 2 12" infinity reference 1262w), for the door speakers I was looking at either kicker 40cs654 6.5" 2-way speakers OR BOSS P65.4C 4-way 6.5" speakers. The BOSS Audio seem to have a bit better looking numbers (higher sensitivity, and RMS handling). The AMP I have is a BOSS Phantom PV3700 5-channel 2-8ohm stable (I plan to run all at 4ohm). 225wx4 RMS and 5th channel 750wx1 both @4ohm. There are two main things I am concerned about, 1. afraid the AMP is going melt my car to a pile of molten sl*g (a bit of a stretch but you get the concern), 2. If the AMP puts out the stated wattage will it run the speakers and sub safely? I really don't crank the music up (sadly I rock audiobooks most of the time, getting old so I just wanted to make all sound in the car louder), if the amp will simply just not work, what would? I do plan to purchase a new receiver in the future but that's on down the road a ways. Oh one more before I forget, would there be a way to lower the power output of the amp and thus lowering its draw from my car?
1) Power the amp properly from the battery and you will be fine.
2) The ratings on any amplifier are what it is theoretically capable of. The amount of power it actually puts out (and the amount of power it draws from the vehicle electrical system) is determined by how loud you play the system. At moderate volume levels, the amp will likely never be required to produce more than 50 watts. If you hear the speakers distorting or if your lights dim, turn it down. :)
