I just bought a sony CD player,a dn i'm having trouble instlaling it. I know where the speaker wires go, but then all the power leads and what not get me confused. The main thing is there's a wire labeled power lead + and i connected that to the right place, but it's not hot when the car is off, and theres another one that says power lead + that is hot all the time. the same with illumination wires. In the camaro theres also an inline fuse, which is another confusion of where that goes. If someone could help me or draw a diagram in paint or something i'd be grateful.
The wire that is getting power all the time is the one you want to hook up to your head unit's constant power wire (usually yellow). The one that loses power when the car is off is the one that connects to the head unit's switched power lead (usually red).
Unless you really really want the illumination/dimmer features I'd just tape off those wires and not have them connected to the vehicle's wiring. It's sometimes difficult to tell which one is which, and if you get the wrong one you can damage your head unit and/or the vehicle's electronics.
As for this inline fuse, which wire is it on? If it's on the wire that has the switched power, then that's fine and you're good to go. Just do your connection after the head unit. The fuse is just there to protect the head unit. Now if it's on the constant power wire it'll probably be no problem but if it's like a 5 amp fuse then it's possible your aftermarket head unit, if turned up very loud, will draw more than 5 amps and thus blow the fuse.

Donate to the12volt.comOkay i removed the inline fuse, i found that it wasn't really needed anyways.... my CD player actually has one buuilt into the back for protection, i also cut the ill/dim wires and taped them off. I tried connecting the two power ones like you said, the yellow to the constant and the red to the one that shuts off, but it's still not working. I'm not sure whats wrong, but i think it'd be easier to identify in person. Does anyone know of a car audio specialist near the vicinty of Hampton Roads, Va., that can check it out for cheap?
Where is hampton roads? You might try the "installer database" link on the left side menu, and see if there's anyone near you. As for checking it out "for cheap"...define cheap?
