Newly installed KD-R980BTS (didn't do the install, but trying to figure out what's wrong to help). Feeling completely crazy that I can't figure out what's wrong, but I'm stumped. Using powered FL, FR, RL, RR outputs and preamp out to sub channel. Went through menu and got the preamp out working for the sub, but the other channels will not work, no matter what I do. Stupid simple setup - single 4ohm speaker on each channel. Tested with an old sony deck and speakers/wiring are fine. Replacement unit has been purchased and installed with exact same results. So, wiring is good, probably not two bad decks in a row, it must be in the setup. Hoping someone knows what it is we're missing....

I believe you can turn off the internal amplifier on JVC decks. Make sure the speaker output is ON. You might want to do a factory reset as well. (See your owner's manual)

SOLVED.

Was driving me crazy, because everything seemed to check out. Got back to testing each speaker individually - AGAIN. Found one speaker wire (-) intermittently shorted to ground. These are mounted in the first floor ceiling of a race hauler trailer and the sheet metal screw holding one of the speakers in had grazed a wire just enough to short the whole thing out frequently enough to shut down the internal amp. Had a hunch the entire time it was something along those lines, just couldn't track it down for a while.
