I'm building my first ported box and I have a question about tuning it.
When I first started researching this topic I found an online tuning calculator that had me enter the sub specs and it spit out an answer of 48.1 hz to tune the port to. So I figured each sub had a certain frequency it performed best at. But now Ive seen a few people online say tune it for the type of music you regularly listen to.

Which is correct, specific frequency for the best performance of a specific sub, or my musical taste?

Music I listen to: Bass Mekanik, Bassotronic, D2theRJ

Sub: DS18 15.4D Hooligan (4)

I want it to rattle my eyeballs when I listen to that type of music.

Thanks

The actual "correct" answer is it depends on the driver. Every speakers has optimal performance characteristics. So to be perfectly correct, figure out what the best boosted frequency band is for what you like then find a subwoofer that can deliver that.

At the same time, any sub can do pretty much anything, with the tradeoffs being efficiency and life expectancy. So if you want to put that driver into an enclosure tuned to 18Hz, you can. But it won't preform to its best and you may or may not get the output you expect.

Thanks DYohn.

One last question to help me finalize my decision on tuning this port.
What are the most common frequencies of the bass in the type of music I listen to, which I stated in my first question?
        Ex: 30hz-40hz range, 40hz-50hz range,....?

On a side note, how would one figure out the frequency of specific music? Do they make an app for that?

Thanks again for taking the time to answer my questions.

Ok, I see sub bass is between 20-60hz, that narrows it down to about a 40hz gap. Hypothetically, let's say you only listened to bass mekanik. What frequency would you personally tune your port to for that music so that the majority of the songs hit hard?

I'm guessing you have experience in tuning ports compared to my zero experience, so I'm interested in opinions.
