I upgraded my system by adding an infinity reference 704a 4 channel amp and new jbl 609c component speakers in the front doors. Those speakers are rated at 3 ohms, while the other 2 amp channels are feeding Memphis 6x9s, which are rated 4 ohm. Setup worked great for last night and most of today, but suddenly the amp is kicking into protect mode and one of the brand new jbl speakers makes a horrible crackling sound. After the amp goes in protect and the speakers make there horrid Moises, there is a clicking sound that doesn't stop until I unplug the negative battery connection... What the hell is going on here? Is it ok to connect speakers with 2 different impedances to different channels on a 4 channel amp? I'm lost and just need some pointers or advice or info. Thanks in advance.

As long as none of the channels are run below the rated impedance there will not be an issue. Sounds like you may have an intermittent grounding of one of the speaker wires. Usually the speaker that is generating the non musical noise you are describing. Disconnect both of those wires from the amplifier and play it a while and see what happens. If all is fine, chances are there is a problem in that door.

I swapped out the jbl components for the Memphis coaxials I had before and they worked absolutely fine. One of the jbls makes clear musical sounds, but only does it without crackling and popping when I reach inside it and press the cone outward, away from the coil. Even when I press the cone inwards the sound clears up. It's like the coil/cone are stuck in the wrong spot or something. It's not grounding or wires, it's not the amp (I also hooked up another amp with the same result). I don't know if I should just take these back or if there's something else it could be

Ya, it's going back to where it came from. Which sucks cuz components are like day to coaxials night. Guess I'll have to find something else. I'm leaning towards infinity kappas... I'm not well versed on components but from the 4 hours I had these going strong, the difference was astounding.

fyi...jbl speakers are just rebadged infinity speakers. Personal opion, If your on a budget can't beat kicker or alpine speakers, the new alpine s components (S-S65C) are really nice with a amp behind them.
