So I installed my amp and subs in my car. When big bass hits my headlights dim pretty bad. Having had this problem before add I g a second battery just for audio doesn't completely fix the issue. Should I just get a bigger second battery and increase the main battery size or get a big capicator. From those out there with this issue what would or should the course of action be. Thanks in advance. James.

The alternator is the source of power for the vehicle. If your system draws more than the alternator can provide, no amount of batteries and/or capacitors will fix this. You need an alternator with a higher output. You didn't mention what vehicle/amp you are using.

I figured that was not really relevant to this question as this has been an issue in 4 different cars. My current car is a 2004 mitsubishi endeavor. 3.8l motor. Stock system with soundstorm 2f1600 amp. Amp is 800 x 2 at 2 ohm which is what I have. 2 audiobahn 12 inch in ported enclosure. Adding the second battery helps some but not completely and is cheaper than a new high output alternator. Thanks for the answer.

Luckily, that amp can't produce 1600 watts, so it may not be as bad as you think. The math just doesn't work. If you add up the 2 25 amp fuses on the side of the amplifier, we'll assume a max 50 amps. At 50 amps and 32 volts input, it would still have to run at 100% efficiency.

We'll assume your factory alternator is rated at 110 amps, since that's what the Autozone replacements are rated.

For $70-$80 more than it would cost for a replacement alternator at the parts store, I found a 220 amp (above 1200 RPM's) alternator on ebay.

You could also look into having a shop rewind your factory alternator for higher output.
