battery to in-line fuse length

I have installation guides that say the inline fuse in the power cable must be located 12-18 inches from the battery, Is this true? What if it's about 25 inches away? Why does it have to be in this area?

You want it as close to that battery as posible to avoid a possibility of a short, if it is only 1 inch from the battery a short can only occur within that 1 inch of unfused length. If it is 25 inches thats 25 inches where a short could occur. And a dead short from the battery with a heavy gauge wire could be very dangerous, if it is small wire it will most likey just light on fire (still not good), heavy gauge and you are looking at a very dangerous situation.

my buddy drives a wreaker and sometimes i ride with him and i have seem many cars and trucks burnt to a crisp from not having a fuse inline close to the batt. i saw one where the dumb @ss put foil around a blown fuse. the foil was about the only thing left. be smart put that fuse as close as you can.

IASCA regulations say 18", but most importantly make sure the wire between the battery and the fuseholder is in no way able to short against any sharp metal objects or from any source of heat (exhaust manifolds). 25" is ok if it's the only location available.
