Hey guys,
I got an issue I could use some help on.
Me being the wonderful husband I am, I bought my wife a 2000 Toyota 4 Runner SR5 for her birthday. I'm happy with it but I have one issue. The sound system has almost no bass. The truck has 2 tweeters up by the mirrors and speakers in each door (I haven't taken it apart to verify the full set up yet. I just got it yesterday) Any suggestions on how I should go about adding bass? I plan on keeping the factory CD head unit and building on that. I was thinking of maybe adding an amp with speaker level inputs and preamp outputs to power the door speakers and another amp to power a small (8 inch) sub. But how would I trigger the amps to turn on when the radio turns on? It doesn't have a power ant. Any Ideas?
Just use the +12 volts swtiched wire that turns the head unit on. It should be able to power on 3 components (radio + 2 amplifiers) with no problem.
I think you will be happy with just adding the subwoofer to the system. As long as it can play the higher bass frequencies you won't need to amplify the door speakers. You'll be able to turn the bass down on the head unit and that'll let you play the system louder before it distorts. So basically what I'm saying is adding a subwoofer will make the whole system more efficient.

Wow, that' s most definetly a better way to go (thanks). But how would I get the sound signal to the amp so that I can run the sub? I'm not sure that the factory radio has low level outputs. Would I still use an amp with speaker level inputs?
Yes. Or use a High to low converter.
If the amp you get has High Level inputs, then you can tap straight from the speaker wire into the amp. If the amp only has Low Level inputs (RCA), then you would need a
Line Out Converter like this one. I'm not trying to sell that one, but it is a good unit. It converts a High Level amplified signal into a Low Level non-amplified signal. IMO, the LOC is the way to go unless you get a different headunit with RCA pre-outs.
