Protection for external connection

I have to make my ground connction to the frame of my '97 Crown Vic on the exterior of the vehicle, it sucks, but I can't find another route within an acceptable distance of the amp. That being said, can anybody recommend a method of protecting this connection (4 gauge ring bolted to frame) from the elements. Could I just smear some all purpose grease on the completed connection and be safe? Also, the connection will be within 8 inches of my exhaust, any ideas on protection from heat for the cable?

Why do you have to make it on the exterior of the vehicle?

Becasue the design of the trunk. It is kind of like a double walled box, where supported by the frame. No bolts from frame into trunk compartment. Again, distance from the amp is an issue as well.

You can ground it almost too any metal surface in the trunk. You do not need to ground it directly to the frame.

If you are confident, then i'll give it a try like that. It's just that I had read so many warnings about grounding to panels that are simply spot welded to the vehicle, and the poor connctions they provide.

Trust me you will not have a problem doing so ,99% of all installs are done this way. Just be sure you sand it down to bare metal and make sure you know what’s on the other side of the panel you are screwing into. Also are you connecting multiple components? If so use the same grounding spot for all the components.
