there are cds available to test things like polarity but you can do it a cheaper and verry good way by using a 1.5 VOLT BATTERY TO TEST IT. Heres what you do,take the speaker wires in question put one on the + side of the battery and put the other on the - side now watch the speaker if the speaker moved out than whichever wire is on the + side of the battery is positive on the speaker,if the speaker moved in than the wire on th e positive side is - on the speaker..

Take a 9V battery and take two wires, one from each lead of the speaker, touch one of the wires to the positive terminal of the battery and one to the negative terminal of the battery. Which ever lead is on the positive when the speaker is popping out is the positive lead of the speaker.

The speaker popping method works great except sometimes for whatever reason you cannot see the speaker and so in those instances, that test is only good for continuity, not polarity.  If it's factory speaker wiring you can test for voltage on the amplifier side and then match up the wire colors.  But otherwise your only other option is to use something like the N-PD-9 from David Navone.

There is a perfect tool called the Speak-Rite (SRD-1?) phase detector made by Smart Engineering Inc. I got mine from a tool program here at Best Buy through American Terminal Supply. I think I found one on the net a while back as well when I was searching before I worked here.
It has a positive and negative clip for each speaker wire, all you do is clip the leads on and point it at the speaker you hear clicking and it tells you if it is in absolute phase or not and also tells of multiple speakers wired together are in phase with an LED display. I like mine becasue there is no CD necessary, only the unit. I paid about $85.00 for mine and it is some of the best $$$ I have spent after wanting one for a few years.

Hey buzz what's this "tool program" you're talking about?  I'm at BBY and no one's ever told me about a tool program....is it some kind of discount or something?

Hi Ethan,
It's a somewhat discounted tool buying program BBY has with ATS. You can download and print the order sheet with pictures and descriptions of the tools by getting on Tagzone Mobile Install page and it's under "view more links" then scroll down the page and you will see "Installer Store" and it's there as PDF pages.
