is is possible to take two amps and combine their power? I saw someone take a JBL 1200.1 and a jensen 300x2 and somehow combine the power to make 750 going in to 2 subs. The woofers RMS was rated at 700 so thats y, but how do you do that?

Not a good idea because the subs will be getting different amounts of power going to them which would cause premature sub failure to the coils.

Some companies let you hook up multiple identical amps and end up with a single output that has the combined power of all of the amps. But they always require you to have identical amps (same brand and model), plus the special cable to connect them together.
Was it wired up in such a way that each sub was getting the same amount of power? Cuz obviously it would be easy to just push one sub with one amp and the other sub with another amp and technically that would work but you'd have to mess with the gains to get them to play at the same volume.

In theory yes you can do that, but I would not recommend it because the gains have to be set to the EXACT same level and with dial-style gain knobs this is practically impossible, unless you have something like an oscilliscope to aid you. Also the input signals for both amps need to be the exact same.
Finally, since identical amps do not always put out the exact same amount of power, just setting both gain controls to 12 oclock would not necessarily mean that they're going to output the same amount of power.

Donate to the12volt.comThe only types of identical amps that I thin can support this type of installation would be Class D ( digital ) amps. Analog amps just can't synch the power output to the speakers well enough without causig some sort of problems.

The Kicker KX.1 series (KX400.1, KX600.1, and KX1200.1) have a feature called "Amp Strapping". They have seperate pre-amp outputs for daisy chaining, but the Amp Strapping outputs are designed specifically for combining 2 identical KX amps and running 1 sub between them. According to the manual for the KX series, when these amps are "strapped", the second amp's controls are bypassed.
Rockford Fosgate Power BD series (500bd, 1000bd, and 1500bd) are also able to be connected via a BdSync cable (and 1 amp being set to 180 degrees phase) to run 1 sub with 2 amps. I'm not sure if the second amp's controls get bypassed like the Kicker's though, I don't think they do.
Either way I wouldn't recommend using 2 amps connected like that to run a DVC if you are using Independant Wiring (1 amp per Voice Coil).
