When building an enclosure, does the port have to be contained inside the box or can it stick out for a port length longer then the dimensions of the box will allow??
It dose not make a bit of difference. The only thing you may want to do is add or subtract the displacement of the port in you enclosure calcs.
Are you sure bberman1? I'm not saying you're wrong, I've just never heard of that being true.....of course i've never heard of it being false either. Anyways, i guess it'd make for one crazy looking box.

Nevermind I'm completely retarded and was picturing something way different in my head. It kinda hit me a second ago.

bberman is correct. The port location and length does not matter nearly as much. You must keep in mind one of the most important keys in a car audio bass enclosure is the critical air space. Usually give at 1.3 cubic feet of airspace per driver I think... it's usually a good starting point. Each driver is different. Also, ported is not always better...depends on what you are trying to achieve in your sound system. Ports always lend the possibility of creating unwanted noise if not done correctly. Your best bet is a port built directly into the box made of the same material and actually incorporated structurally to avoid any rattle one may experience from a plastic insert. I've worked professional audio for 2 years and prefer non-ported boxes...but it's all a matter of personal opinion...hope I didn't get too far off the mark on this one...sorry...just trying to give you some things to consider
