Subject: Head Unit - Pioneer DEH-P940MP ?

Im looking for a good head unit for my 03 GT Stang.  The one im leaning towards is the Pioneer Premier DEH-P940MP.  It seems to be one of the best HU on the market, full of features, and a nice clean look.  Does anyone have this head unit, how do you like it?  I know MSRP is close to $900, but i can get it online around $500.  I plan on also adding new speakers, subs/amps etc.  With the 3 6volt outputs, i think it will make for a pretty nice system.

Any other opinions/suggestions about this headunit would be much appriciated.  Thanks

You can't go wrong with a pioneer deck.  Their built in EQ is better than anyone else's, and they look pretty too.  Also they seem to last forever.  Only other deck i'd touch beside a pioneer would be a kenwood or a panasonic.  I think that would be a wise choice for your system.

That head unit is an outstanding unit and would be a really solid foundation for a high-end system.  On that model in particular it has the 13-band EQ built-in....and the auto-EQ thing with the built-in microphone is also pretty cool and definitely can improve the sound a lot in some vehicles.

As I've said many times before, Pioneer/Premier are my personal favorite brand of head units and you can never go wrong with one.  My pioneer deh-46dh is 5 years old and has been through a tornado, among other things, and still works like it's brand new.  'Nuf said.

Cool, thanks for the input!  My last deck was a panasonic, which i really liked a lot.. but i dont much care for their new line of stuff, which is why i started drooling over this one.

Do you get the same sound quality out of say the Pioneer 6400-cd with the monitor as you would with the 940-mp? I am planning to get that unit and hook up my PS2. Followed by Pioneer subs and a nice little amp. Just a question just in case MrStang wants to go with an LCD. Im new to this, so Im not sure.

I dont think im gonna do lcd screens yet.... maybe later on down the road.  In answer to your question... as for your question - I just checked out the specs, it appears to have a 50w x 4, which is the same as the 940-mp.  It only has a 3 band EQ instead of a 13 band, so you cant fine tune it to sound quite as good.  Im no expert, just making an educated guess - but i think it will be close in sound quality - probably not much of a noticable difference.

I havnt done anything to my stang yet.  Ive only had it 3 months....  and between the car payment, insurance, and gas... it kinda limits what i have left to spend on the fun stuff!  Im saving up to do my stereo, then once thats rocking, ill probably start performance mods.  how about you?

Thanks for the information on the decks. As far as that goes, Im probably going to get that deck. I am also going to get two 10" Infinity Kappas and Im not sure what amp yet. I dont want anything really hard hitting, I just want alittle more thump than what the mach puts off.

So far I have gotten the windows tinted 5%, euro tails, cut off the mufflers (sounds crazy man, but if you want some awesome sound go for it, I thought it would be too loud, but it sounds great. Catalytic Convertors muffle it enough), 2000 y2k cobra r rims, nitto 555's, k&n, cold air kit (homeade), PS2 mounted in the dash powered up with an invertor (waiting on my insurance money to come in for the deck, subs, box, and amp), white face gauges ($30 on eBay and look awesome), dual gauge pod with voltage meter to make sure the system isnt going to drain me and an air/fuel ratio gauge, and thats it for the time being. As soon as I get the audio/video stuff out of the way, Im going to get blue lights put underneath it, 3:73 gears, h&r lowering springs, billet grille, and Im not sure where I will go from there. Im in college right now and between working 35-40 hours a week and getting scholarships, Ill be able to do a lot. The insurance helped a lot though. I was hit by a Frito Lay's truck and they had to pay for everything including the rental that I never got. The car was messed up for a month, because they were fighting me over it and well, we won. They owed me $30 a day for rental and I had $1100 to play with because it messed up 2 tires, one tailight, and 2 rims. Thats where the rims, tires, and euros came from, so it worked out really well. Well man, good luck with your system, if you want any info on engine mods or what not e-mail me at xbarron23x@hotmail.com or IM me at SilvrGT2002 on AOL IM.  Pleasure talking to you man.

They both have the same internal amplifier so technically they would sound pretty much the same for most systems.  The p940mp has more equalization settings built in to it that lets you customize the sound to your particular vehicle, but the 6400cd does have the standard pioneer bass/treble controls with independent front/rear settings and different cutoff points, etc.

The p940mp has 6V preouts while the 6400cd has 4V preouts.  Honestly this doesn't mean much of anything, because if it's properly installed/grounded, and the 4-channel amp is properly installed/grounded, the extra input voltage will just mean you won't have to turn the gain up as high.  4volts as it is is pretty high though, so unless you intend to do SQ competitions or listen with a pair of headphone, it should be more than sufficient.  Also remember that if you are using the unit's internal amplifier, the 6 volt vs. 4 v debate does not even apply.

The sound quality of both units is excellent, but I don't think either one is necessarily any better.  Some people swear by Premier and claim the sound quality is better than Pioneer. Honestly I don't know if I agree with that--maybe for an SQ system, but for regular vehicles that move and make noise and are not 100% soundproof, you'll never heard the difference.

I'm not trying to knock on Premier cuz it's certainly one of my favorite brands.  Just saying sometimes it's not worth the extra money.  And to be fair I derfinitely prefer the silver look of the P940MP over the grey color of the P9400MP.posted_image

I would sugguest looking into the ECLIPSE line. they don't have lots of  "EYE CANDY" but for performance and sq No one comes close IMO.
