I just installed a Clarion DVD headunit and 2 sets of JL Audio speakers. The headunit had a separate amp with 18x4 watts rms.  When I turn it up anymore than halfway the speakers get heavily distorted and sometimes make a popping sound. I have heard this could be caused by underpowering but I'm not sure. Also, is it possible the distortion could be coming from the power supply? The power cable is within a foot or so of the wiring harness. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

No the distortion is not coming from the power cable.  The power cable itself may be too small, but I think that's not what's causing your problem.  Just an overall lack of sufficient amplifier power is what's the problem.  Only thing I can suggest is that if you want it up that loud you'll have to turn down the bass and treble a little bit.  Or get an external 4-channel amplifier.
