Subject: Newbie/New System Help??

My son has a 1996 Dodge Ram 1500 extended cab Pickup Truck.

I'm lookng at installing the following:

Alpine 9813 HU

Infinity Kappa 692.5I  6" x 9" front

Infinity Kappa 52.5I  5.25" rear

Infinity Basslink  10" woofer w/amp built in  under rear fold down seat

The problem I have is Crutchfield says the speakers will not fit in place of the OEM.

Infinity says it will

Cartoys says it will

Tweeter says it will

Who should I believe?  I want to order online to save money but, I'm afraid it might ot fit when it arrives.  What other items should I get   ie:  wire harness, adapters, faceplates, etc.

Also, will these items work well together?  Are these system choices good or bad?

Any help will be very much appreciated.

I thought Dodge Ram's had 5X7 in the doors... but  I checked on Crutchfield and I am wrong.  It indeed says your door speakers are 6X9 and your rear speakers are 5-1/4.  Check HERE to see for yourself.

So it seems your setup will fit.  And it should sound pretty good, IMO.

I have run the Crutchfield What fit's my car ? page and the only 6"x 9" they say will fit is an Alpine SPS 6939S.   I would rather use the infinity Kappas.  I find it hard to believe that of all of the 6 x 9 speakers in Crutchfield that the Alpine is the only one that will fit.

The Infinity has a mounting depth of 3-3/16 inches, and the Alpine is 2-13/16 inches.  So, the Infinity is 3/8 inches deeper.  This may be enough so that it interfers with a window mechanism.  Or it could simply be that Dodge publishes the depth at 2-13/16 but that the deeper speaker would also fit.

I also like the sound of the Kappa line, but the Alpines actually sound pretty darn good too.  You might want to try the Infinity set if you can buy them somewhere with return rights in case they are just too deep.

Yea the reason almost all of them are filtered out is because of the depth inside the door.  If you get a speaker too deep, its magnet will stick out too far and the edge of the actual window itself will hit the magnet when you try to roll it down.  Also they might have filtered out some models due to excessive tweeter protrusion.

Both sizing issues can technically be worked around but it may take a lot more work and cutting/sanding/grinding to make the speaker fit properly.  Crutchfield is geared towards easy replacement of equipment and so having to do something like cut out part of a panel on the inside, to make a replacement speaker fit properly, is not something they want most customers to have to do.  So that's why they may filter out certain models.

If you decide to not get your stuff from crutchfield, you'll need a dash kit and wiring harness (Metra 70-1817 or equivalent) for the head unit, an amp kit for the basslink, and if u want, speaker harnesses.  Chrsyler has a few different kinds of speaker harnesses though and I'm not sure which one is on your vehicle so I don't know exactly which to select.  Crutchfield should be able to tell you--just choose the appropriate location for the speaker section, then go to installation, speaker installation, wiring harnesses, and whatever it comes up with is the harness you'd need for that particular location.
