A friend gave me  an alpine 7940 was wondering does this unit have a builtin amp to wire to the speakers or do i need to run a separate amp.I just wanna run the hu without  an amp to the stock speakers.I didnt have the plug so i need to know before i go out and get the harness.

If you look at the manual for the 7940 you'll notice that they don't give any amplifier power output ratings, although they do mention the speaker output connections.  I think the 2nd page of the document (the one with the speaker output connections) is just a generic kind of thing that applies to many different alpine models and not just the ones without built-in amplifiers.

Also, this other pdf file from alpine is the "archived product manual" and it covers both the 7940 and the 7842.  When you look at the specifications section where it lists "maximum power output" it has a little note that says "CDA-7842 only", so that's really what made me think that the 7940 definitely has no built-in amp.
