what way should the subs face
the trunk? or the front of the car?

Usually you'll have the least amount of standing waves with the box facing the back of the car.  Having an angled box (subs angled up) seems to make a difference as well.  If I were you, I'd try your box in every place/position imaginable to see what you get, starting with the "stock" placement.

the reason i ask is because on the inside the subs sound great but when i am outside the car i dont reall hear any bass

Try walking further away from the car.  If it's loud enough, you'll hear the bass carry past everything else.  If it doesn't consider yourself lucky, that's how stereo's get stolen!!

If you really want to get the bass louder outside of the car through speaker placement I'm afraid I don't have an educated answer for you, but perhaps someone who's more knowledgeable could help you.
