My buddy has a 99 Ford Explorer with the upgraded stereo which includes steering wheel controls.  His cd player is slowly dying on him, and a factory head unit runs about $650.  So he is interested in using the programmable SWI-X from PAC to program his steering wheel controls for an aftermarket head unit.  Does anyone have any experience doing this?

Yea, it works, but the installation can be a bit of a pain as the IR transmitter must be installed in line-of-sigt to the front of the new head unit.  I have installed them in arm rests and in head liners.  The time it takes to program the PAC unit can be a bit tredious, also.  You have to be sure you purchase a new head unit that uses IR remote control.

But if your goal is to keep the steering wheel controls, it is worth the time!
