my friend who owns a car audio shop recently told me L5s and L7s are junk for high power applications, he says this is because its a square sub but it still has a round voice coil, he says when the sub comes close to Xmax the cone changes shap and flexes a bit and this can pull the voice coil and eventually break it or make it rub the magnet, is this true? does this really happen?

yes it is true,,,the only advantage in a square sub is in SPL comps, as you can almost cheat, a 10" square has more area than a 10" circle so produces more air movement...I personally think a 10" square should be put up against 12" circles, and so forth..
