I had a friend tell me that if i got a amp to power my rear speakers that i could hook up the speaker outputs from the stereo to the amp and gain the extra 104 watts of output, is this true?

NO if you have an amp that puts out 100 watts and the head unit puts out 50 watts you will still only have 100 watts of power. If the amp has a high input (speaker wire input) it will then convert it to a low signal and amplify that.

You guessed right there. Never advisable to hook up a speaker to 2 different amps even if they are the same model amp.
