My girlfriend owns a a mint condition 2 Door 1981 Volvo 240 DL and she needs some good tunes in it. Already she has pioneer HU installed but she needs some speakers. The only thing it has is 1 4" speaker in each door and they sound like sh*t. I am juggling between MB Quarts and Infinities for the front since their are so many that fit. I want to replacing those but i would also like to install something in the back also. Possibly 2 6x9's behind the seat. I guess im hoping if anyone thats done an install on this type of car or has some idea to throw out some suggestions on what i could do for the back, and some suggestions on speakers for the front.

I would defiantly go with MB all the way around. But what kind of sound is she looking for? Do you plan on adding any amps? Subs? Also how much are you looking to spend on the equipment?

Right now anything would be better than what she has now. She listens to mostly hardcore/punk fo alot or screaming and guitars. The amp thing i think shes just dreaming about and wont ever happen. This is going to be a birthday gift to her from her parents, so i am trying to figure out what to do with her car so she can tell her parents what and where to buy it. www.ikesound.com is where i think i am going to get the speakers. Right now you hear nothing from behind you since the only speakers are in the door. I think adding the speakers in the rear would be a snap.

What is your budget and do you want a new headunit (radio) as well?

If you could get some 6x9s to fit in the rear deck, that would be a huge improvement in bass response. But since you say the car is in good condition, I would get your girlfriend's permission before cutting into the rear deck.

If the rear deck has small speaker holes already, you may be able to make use of plastic 6x9 spacers---Metra makes them. They sit about 1 1/2" up, and the 6x9's magnet kinda drops into the old speaker's round hole. You'll still end up with screw holes going into the rear deck, but that may be better than cutting big holes.

Also, are you going for a factory look? Metra makes these little metal brackets, that will allow you to keep the factory front door speaker grilles when replacing the speakers. (You'll need to select new speakers with tweeters that don't protrude too much.)
