My son has a 2000 GMC Sierra single cab pickup with a Kenwood KDC 4019 CD player and factory speakers. He wants to upgrade his speaker system but has gotten a wide range of suggestions from friends/retailers. Prices range from $200-$1000. His goals are to improve the sound in his truck without going all out with amps,subwoofers and the like. He expects to be getting a larger truck in the next couple of years and would like to move this system to the new truck and add more power at that time. He needs some guidance on what size speakers and configuration would work with his current cd player( RMS power 22w x 4 Peak power 50w x 4 ). Recommendations on brands and budgets would be appreciated.

Wallmart has good speakers for the money... will be a big difference in sound on the cheap.

That's where I got mine, and I've got no complaints, considering they were 60 bucks a pair.

I wouldn't recommend going with the subwoofers they sell, but the Pioneer speakers are a solid value.

Are they the best of the best?

Nope... don't kid yourself... but if it's just an improvement in sound you're looking for, and will be getting rid of the vehicle anyhow, that's my advice.

You should be able to fit up to 6.5" speakers in the front doors, and either 4x6's or 6.5" speakers in the rear pillars.

If you're looking for decient sounding speakers for a cheap price, then Pioneer's should do you fine.

Depending on if your son plans to upgrade to an external amp(s) for the internal speakers in the future (as well as subs), then you may want to look into higher quality speakers if you can afford them.

Pioneer currently offers 4 different 4x6" model speakers (listed below). Unless your son plans on using them with an external amplifier, then I would go with one of the models rated at 20 watts RMS

My own personal preference is to stay away from the TS-G* series if at all possible. I've never liked the sound they produce.

There has been multiple debates as to whether 2-way speakers sound better then 3-ways or 4-ways. It's all personal preference. I've run 2-ways and 3-ways before (have yet to run 4-ways), and personally prefer 2-ways when dealing with coaxial speakers. But then again, I make up for what 3-ways and 4-ways produce by using component (seperate tweeters) speakers in the front, 2-ways in the rear, and subs in the back.

Component speakers can be more difficult to install due to the crossover and seperate tweeters. Shops will install them for you for pretty cheap if you cannot do it yourself.
