Upon removing the stero I was surprised to find a 3rd connector, a single black wire. There is no voltage present in any ign or headlight switch positions. I'm guessing its a ground but would like to confirm this. Tracing the wire looks like a big project. Anyone familiar w/ this application?
Thanks.

Single black wire could be for an upgraded stereo system where an amplifier was used. ive come across the same thing where it was sitting there for no reason. Manufacturers wire cars for everything that it could possibly come with, whether it is used or not depends on what  accessories the person decides to buy with the car. Hopefully that helped.

If you want to check to see if it's a ground, using a test meter, connect one probe to the black wire and the other to vehicle chassis.  If the resistance is fairly low, or it shows continuity, it's a ground wire.  If it's not, it's not!
