Why would you wire two 4ohm speakers in a series when amps have a 4-ohm max ?

Assuming you meant minimum instead of maximum, there could be several reasons for doing this and there is nothing wrong it. Two 4 ohm speakers wired in series would give you an 8 ohm load and would be within the safe operating range of that amplifier, however two 4 ohm speakers wired in parallel would give you a 2 ohm load and would not be within the safe operating range of that amplifier.

BTW, I've never heard of an amplifier having a maximum impedance rating of 4 ohms.
