what do you installers do when someone comes in with a newer car with a factory bose system.....Ive noticed alot of Nissan and Mazda's with the Bose speakers and setup, and since they are 2 ohm, it must be difficult to hook up if not impossible to connect to a aftermarket HU. Also, Bose makes some very good quality stuff, so how come after market speaker manufacturers dont make 2-ohm speakers? Just some questions for people to debate over

Well in my humble oppinion bose makes 2 ohm speakers so you have to use bose equipment. i am also guessing that aftermarket speaker manufacturers dont make 2 ohm speakers because only bose HU's will drive them without a problem. and if your going to spent the extra money to put in aftermarket speakers you will most likley trash the low power factory HU. Just one guys oppinion

haha okay....so what is the deal with bose anyway is there stuff actually better? or do you you only pay for the name?

well that is a tricky question. in bose home theater products the quality and depth of sound primarily comes from the enclosure of the speaker. if you get a chance check out the design of bose's subwoofer enclosure. It is definetly non-conventional. However if you look at the absolutly absurd price you would pay for a bose system... you can probably see where i am going with this. Anyway to relate this back to car audio the factory installed bose products have no fancy enclosure so the bose name isnt the quality people expect, at least in the 12 volt arena. Dont get me wrong the bose systems sound a hella of a lot better than the stock trash, but for the price of the option i would rather go all aftermarket. but an oppinion is like an a$$ hole...everyone has one

It's not that their stuff is better, it's simply because their uses less resistance. Since Bose systems work off a 2 ohm load and most aftermarket and non "premium sound" systems work off a 4 ohm load bose can do more with less. Most bose systems are based on the "infinite baffle" theory in that the speaker is smaller inside an amplified enclosure. Usually you can get an adapter that will allow the use of aftermarket amps and speakers with a bose head unit. You "can" hook up a 4 ohm speaker to bose system but you will not get very much volume from it. Usually, if any part of a bose system goes out (for example, one of the amps), you have to replace every component. Some cars are more troublesome than others (I feel bad for those of you with 93 to 97 Mazda Rx-7's- that wave tube can be a real problem). So what you really are paying for is a compact system that can put out pretty big sound (sort of). ------------- Duane...

okay, since 2-ohm speakers are more efficient, how come speaker manufacturers havnt picked up on this? its common for subs to have a 2 ohm voice coils so that they can be more efficient......

They have picked up on it. But the thing is, less resistance equals more heat. Usually, a DVC sub needs to be powred by an amp that is 2 ohm or 1 ohm stable. A bose system is already calibrated in regards to that. That's why the after market and non premium sound system operate at 4 ohms. ------------- Duane...

the bose systems sound great...and not all of them are 2ohm speakers. i worked on a camaro last week that the front two bose speakers were acutually 4ohm. we just had to bypass the amp in order to use the alpine head unit i installed in it. but then the rear speakers were 1ohm so we replaced those. bose systems can be very tricky ESPECIALLY the mazda rx7's with that ridiculous wave tube that duane mentioned. with almost all bose systems, if you replace the head unit, all the speakers have to be replaced and the factory amps bypassed.

actually I meant to phrase it as a question I just typed it wrong....I dont really know anything about their setups I was just trying to learn a few things here....

Bose the gift that keeps on giving. They're ok for individualy amplified speakers. You can hook up an aftermarket radio to the Bose speakers with an PSI-2( think the right one). The way we do it is better from a shops point of view. To replace the head, we will have to replace all 4 speakers. Heres a trick that work's on most Bose systems. Rather then running new wires to each speaker. At each amp. harness there's 4 wires. 2 bigger guage and 2 smaller. Now the 2 bigger are the 12v. and ground for the amp. The 2 smaller are speaker leads that are at the radio's OEM harness. Just tap into the 2 smaller and saved yourself some time. Now I only do it that way if the customer doesn't want to amp the new speakers. If i'm amping them I run new wires. ------------- Cris
