if you have a box and face the subs towards the trunk, does the space between the box and the sides of the trunk act as a single reflex bandpass when the seats are down?

:)  I suppose it could, but you'd have to seal the area and tune the "port"...  What will certainly happen, though, is you'll get reflections and acoustic coupling with the air space in the car that will seem to amplify some frequencises and absorb others.  You will hear different reflected sound waves.  By facing the driver back instead of forward you have effectively increased the length of the car and IN THEORY may get better coupling at a slightly lower frequency... but this is a stretch.  Try it both ways and if one way sounds better to you than the other then that's the way to leave it!
