Car - 1995 Audi -6 originally with bose audio system. Radio and CD changer died, speakers still work OK.
My local Tweeters replaced the dash unit with an Alpine xm-ready single CD unit, which will play mp3s, etc. Problem is that gradations of volume control are far too large - sounds gets much too loud too fast as volume level turned up. Also, every time I change tracks, there's a noticeable "thump" in the speakers.
I'm told its because speakers have built-in amps, which yield a low 1 ohm impedance, and the amps in my new radio are in danger of killing themselves from the excessively low impedance.
Can't some creative person just put some resistors in series with the speakers, to increase impedance to 6 or 8 ohms, which would reduce volume and presumably stress on the radio's amps? Must I replace all my speakers?

Your best bet is to dump the powered audio speakers and replace them. What you are hearing is less due to impedence loading and more due to the built-in speakers amplifying the output from your deck. The amps need to be by-passed, which I don't think is possible in that type of system (someone correct me if I'm wrong, please!)
I'd go to the shop that installed your head unit and slap them upside the head and call them amateurs for allowing you to leave with that setup. It is asking for disaster and a fried Alpine head unit.
