hi..I'm currently running kicker 6 1/2" components up front and kenwood 6 by 9's in the back, off a kicker kx300.4.
I'm happy with my midrange and top end, and everything images well.
I'm looking for realy punchy bass, not boomy bass. I'm considering a kicker kx400.1 amp and running one 10" comp vr to its reccomended 400 watts rms.
my question is wether or not one sub will be enough, or should I use two tens and a bigger amp. not looking to over kill the bass, but have it in your face.
(ps. I only listen to hard rock)

I recently listened to Xtant X series 10's (Xtant X104). You should take a listen to those if you can. My best suggestion is to go out to audio stores and listen to the subs yourself. You could get a ton of answers from here, but those will be based on other peoples opinions, when in reality you need to find something YOU like.

My experience has been that a couple of 10's running at least 150 RMS each will give you a very nice sound with some punch.  It sounds like you want to feel as well as hear the bass, so I'd definitely go with two.
