I am about to be installing an XMD1000P5 sony xplod amp 500W RMS at 4 Ohm and 900W RMS at 2 ohm and it has a fuse rating of 120amp(comes with 3 40amp fuses in the amp). Crutchfield suggests that I use a 150amp fuse next to the battery. I am wondering if this is important, does the amp at the battery have to be atleast 120amps?? Do I absolutley need a fuse at the amp?? I am confused?? Can anyone help me out??
Yes, fuses are important, unless you like car-b-q. Do you need a 150 amp, probably not. But you do need something. I would reccommend a 100 amp circuit breaker or something close to that.

I've been sick lately, sorry I won't be on much.
With a 120 amp fuse rating that amp would be capable of putting out just over 1500 watts rms. Now its rms rating @ 2ohms is 1000 watts, so there is a good chance that the amp may be under rated. Now as far as fusing the amp, the only necessary fuse to add would be a 120 amp fuse within 18 inches of the battery. Now with a 120 amp rating you will need to use an ANL fuse

Once again I am going to be installing a XPD1000P5 Sony Mono (L+R) amp and the amp has 3 40amp fuses in it. I have seen that you can use an ANL fuse of a 120amps or more or I can use a circuit breaker, but with the circuit breaker I dont know how big to use?? Just wondering what the pro's prefer or suggest.
A circuit breaker is operates just as the fuse. You can also use a circuit breaker that is 120 amps or greater. The biggest advantage is that when you trip a circuit breaker you just flip the switch back to on when you find out what caused it to flip off. With a fuse you have to spend a few dollars for another fuse. The down side to a circuit breaker is that when you want to upgrade you have to get another breaker and with a fuse you just get a larger fuse. If you are going to have more than one amp you will need to get a circuit breaker that will accommodate both amps.
I also think you should only need a 120 amp fuse by the battery. Just use the same for the battery as you use for the amplifier.
