I went into a dealer to demo a new sub. the guy played it for me but warned the it was only getting 600 watts and needs at least 1000 watts. It sounded good until he started to push is hard as it then started to distort. He then left and turned it way down to where you could only hear it if you were right up on it. I got close to check the build quality of the cone and surround and heard a static like sound on every bass note. I touched the decal on the dustcap to see if that was it to no avail. I touched the left side of the surround and the sound got worse. I touched the right side and the sound went away. I though maybe it was out of alignment or something. I told the guy and he said since it was so under powered the it was just the signal crossing over the coils. I have never heard of such a thing. I never had this kind of problem when I was younger and didn't have enough power for my subs. Any ideas?

He's full of crap. What you describe sounds like a damaged surround, probably on the right side of the cone.

I'm not sure what side it would be on. when I touched the left it was a little worse, but when tried top and kinda pulled up with just a little bit of pressure it go really bad. All he told me was not to worry since they have a great warranty. I want a great product and a great warranty.

i just wanna say what i think about this senerio. to me any noise that comes out of a sub besides low freq. is bad and for their demo sub to be havin noise doesnt that just show how well the company works? i mean i know the people will bs a little to sell their product but arent demo's usually better than the product and in like mint condition?

It was a JL Audio 12w6v2. I'm not sure what condition the demo was in. alot of times demo's take a beating, but then again they're going to take the same beating when you get them in your car..

I just realized something, 600 watts is more than enough for that sub according to JL's website. They recommend about 400 for an ideal setup.

It has nothing to do with power. The sound you hear is either a defective speaker or a bad installation.

Sounds like a bad sub to me as far as the static noise goes! But beside the point with 600 watts going to a W6 v2 it should pound and sound pretty clean. As far as it distorting he might not have had the setup adjusted properly, that will almost always cause distortion at higher volume levels.
